Welcome
Welcome to the Kamloops Tourism Stories deep map, a cultural mapping project authored by Prof. Kathleen Scherf’s Fall 2019 Travel Media class (CMNS 3020). A deep map uses the advantages of digital technology to “deepen” a conventional two-dimensional map to depict a sense of a place, rather than merely a geographical location. Such a map can convey both tangible and intangible elements of a community. In this way, it is possible to “map” a culture. Tourism in Kamloops has been growing steadily over the past few years; in 2018, Kamloops enjoyed visits by 1.85 million tourists who brought $449 million to our local economy.
Who supports all these visitors? In this map, we seek to tell the stories that lie behind the brochure, to illuminate the culture of the people who make tourism happen in Kamloops.
Questions? Please contact Professor Scherf at kath@tru.ca.
