Kamloops locals know that their city is host to plenty of incredible and unique dining locations, and one of the brightest spots on the map is Iron Road Brewing. Located just minutes away from Thompson Rivers University, Iron Road has been a staple for Kamloops locals since their opening in 2017.

Inspiration

No matter what your preference, Kamloops’ Iron Road Brewing delivers. Inspired by the city it sits in and the two railroads that intersect here (Canadian Pacific and Canadian National), Head brewer Aaron McInnis names his beers after railroad terminology, and the wrought-iron tasting room decor suits the blue-collar vibe founding partners Jared Tarswell and Richard Phillips set forth to curate in their brewery.

“We looked at the town and saw Kamloops as a hardworking city, and we wanted to draw from that for our inspiration. We were both geologists before, so we brought from our own blue-collar hands-dirty background as well,” Tarswell said.

Iron Road offers a variety of beers and food as well. It’s a popular lunchtime spot for everyone.

Where the Locals Go

Lunches with friends, family get-togethers, after-parties and date nights: Iron Road plays host to it all for Kamloopsians. It’s a go-to for everyone from TRU students to working professionals.

“Many times. When my friends and I want to grab a beer, we’re quick to suggest Iron Road and end up here more often than I’d care to admit. But it’s good, not overpriced, and we love it every time!” TRU student Brenden Dueck said.

“The nachos of any kind are my favourite. Kids are allowed as well, so on a lunch break we can come in and have different food than what we’re usually eating,” remarked Kristen Exelby, a patron of Iron Road in regards to their Mexican street food offerings.

“I’ve had study sessions here. It’s a relaxing place to get to hangout when school is adding stress, and there’s enough space to spread out a couple textbooks,” said TRU student Keaton Carruthers.

Iron Road is also home to two distinct Kamloops sports groups: rock climbers and mountain bikers. “The mountain bikers who use the Kamloops Bike Ranch and frequent Sun Peaks in the summer often meet in here. We like to be accommodating and make room for their bikes. It’s quite the scene; all the riders in here in their dirty gear,” McInnis commented.

Local rock climbers also meet at Iron Road as the brewery is minutes from the local climbing gym, Cliffside Climbing. “It’s awesome,” TRU tourism student and climber James Campbell said, “you can put in a few hours at the gym and then you’re ten minutes away from a sweet spot with great beer to hang out at after.”

Distinguished and Award Winning

Iron Road also boasts international recognition, winning a gold medal in the Wood and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category at the 2019 Canadian Brewing Awards for their “boxcar tourist.” Since then, the team at Iron Roads has noted the varied geography of their patrons.

Locals aren’t just from Kamloops either, as the brewery is a key stop on the Kamloops-Shuswap-Vernon B.C. Ale Trails tour. Partnered with heavyweights throughout the Okanagan such as Red Collar, Martens’ and The Barley Station, Iron Road stands out.

Iron Road offers a warm and welcoming environment where locals and tourists alike enjoy a fantastic craft brewery environment, great beers, and special events such as the popular jazz night (lead by McInnes — a studied jazz guitarist). Paired with a heaping plate of nachos, tacos or even churros, Iron Road satisfies at any time of the day. Whether it’s to celebrate a special occasion or simply hang out with friends, Iron Road Brewery is a train you won’t want to miss.
